Whether your hair is naturally on the straighter side or you have a slight wave or curl, a sleek, straight blowout is a timeless style that makes a statement no matter the length of your tresses. It’s also a desirable ’do for keeping frizzies and flyaways at bay.

Of course, straight doesn’t mean limp and lifeless. The secret sauce to a successful straight-hair blow dry combines the right products and proper technique. So, before reaching for your dryer, check out our pro tips on achieving a straight and shiny blowout at home.

Step 1. Start with Clean Hair

Step 2. Prep Your Tresses with a Heat Protectant

Let your hair air dry until it’s damp, not sopping wet, before applying a heat protectant such as Better Natured®’s Heat Styling Lotion. Step 3. Remove Excess Moisture

The secret to any great blowout is roughly drying your hair about 80 percent before beginning the styling process. While you still want to use a heat protectant, removing excess moisture helps negate potential damage from hot tools like a dryer. Cut the overall blow drying time for your hair by using a moisture-wicking microfiber towel and air drying your hair before bringing out the blow dryer.

Step 4. Section Your Hair 

Divide your hair into sections and secure it with clips. How many sections should you make? It depends on how much hair you have and how it’s cut — the more layers you have, the more you’ll need. As a general rule of thumb, part your hair from ear to ear and create a top and bottom section. Secure the top and divide the bottom into two to three — more if needed.

Step 5. Brush and Blow

Now you can start drying your sections. When blow drying your hair straight, use a boar bristle paddle brush — natural bristles promote smooth tresses and high shine. Keep those round ceramic brushes for wavier, bouncier blowouts. 

• Start at the Bottom: Take a small section of hair from the bottom section. Position your brush underneath the area close to the root. Hold your blow dryer about three inches above the hair. Slightly twist your wrist outwards to create tension on the hair. Slowly pull the brush towards the tips while following with your dryer.
• Finish the Ends: Once you reach the tips, slowly pull the brush away outwards while drying. Increase the tension even further to give the ends a smooth finish.
• Continue with All Sections: Continue using the same technique with all sections. Avoid frizziness by not handling the hair until it’s completely cool.
